About CTW
Q) Where did CTW find the recipe for the packaged meals that you package and send around the world?
A) CTW packages the original Kids Against Hunger recipe and is licensed and approved to do so.
Q) How was the food formula developed and what is so special about it?
A) See the Food and Nutrition section here.
Q) How do you decide where the food will be sent?
A) Decisions regarding the destination of our food are made on a case-by-case basis. We make every effort to provide our meals to those feeding partners who will ship them to where the need is greatest. When one of our partners submits an appeal for food and is approved, we place them ?in line? for a shipment. This is subject to food availability and import approval from the government in the recipient country. We will provide meals only to those organizations that we believe we can trust to distribute the food properly and freely to those who are in need.
Q) How does the food get there?
A) CTW partners with Missionary Expeditors, Inc. who has 50 years experience in relief and missionary cargoes. Meals are shipped one way in an 18 foot freight container. Containers are shipped unmarked without CTW identification to avoid any suspicion of humanitarian aid. This prevents our containers from being targeted when incidence happen at sea. CTW has never had a container hijacked or compromised during travel. Learn more about Missionary Expeditors here.
Q) What is CTW’s relationship with local governments and NGOs?
A) CTW is a non-partisan, non-governmental, 501(c)3 organization. CTW seeks only to partner with organizations that operate with the governmental approval and acknowledgment in all countries in which they are active, depending on local government and NGO partners to work successfully.
Q) Do you provide food aid for families in the U.S.?
A) Yes. Our main focus is on feeding children abroad, but we also help families in the U.S. The main reason our overall focus on shipping our meals to foreign countries is because – even though there are hungry people within the U.S. – you are not as likely to find starving people. The U.S. has a safety net in place to assist those in need – including food pantries, government assistance (food stamps), and church pantries – whereas families in foreign countries in most cases cannot rely on support from their government and are left to fend for themselves.
About the Event
Q) How do I find an event near me?
A) It’s real easy. Go to the Event Locator page here.
Q) Are there any age limitations to packaging food?
A) There are opportunities for nearly every age to participate at a food
packing event, but we do require that each participant on the assembly line be at least 5 years old. We recommend that groups of youth be 3rd grade or older.
Q) How many volunteers does it take to package 50,000 meals?
A) Ideally you will need 150 people to package the meals between 10 assembly lines. It breaks down like this:
- 10 people on admin/planning team
- 10 assembly line captains
- 10 supply
- 120 assembly line workers (12 people x 10 lines)
- 150 = number of total workers needed
Q) How long will it take to package 50,000 meals?
A) From start to finish, all meals can be packaged within 5 hours including set up and tear down of the assembly lines. Yes, that’s incredibly efficient!
Q) Can CTW help secure media coverage for my event?
A) Unfortunately we are unable to provide media relations assistance for events you are planning, but please feel free to seek coverage on your own. If someone would like to interview a CTW staff member, please e-mail media@changethisworld.com to set this up.
About Starvation
Q) Why Food?
A) Read these statistics and you will understand: The most recent estimates released by FAO project that 1.02 BILLION people in the world are undernourished! 1.02 billion people is 15 percent of the worldwide population of 6.8 billion! Of those 8 million die each year directly related to starvation. That?s 23,483 per day. 1 every 3 seconds!
Q) Why Kids Against Hunger’s food?
A) Kids Against Hunger’s meals have been formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by a malnourished person’s body and mind. The food also accommodates to the broad diversity of ethnic tastes and religious differences around the world. Kids Against Hunger’s meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition – something that can’t be said about other typical food relief sources such as rice or beans alone. The beauty of the food formulation is its simplicity. It is made from four readily available, dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods, and require only boiling with water to prepare. Despite the simplicity of the food’s content, it is a nutritionally complex and a well-balanced meal.
